Snow in Tahoe

February 24, 2019 Claudia Retter
Red hut on the ski trail

I saw a lot of snow when I lived in Vermont. There were some occasional serious storms where we had to shovel snow off the roof for fear of its collapsing, but more or less, winters felt like living in a quiet snow-globe postcard with the fun challenge of driving around in it.

The week we were in Tahoe, it seems they were measuring snow in feet, not inches (and I think in yards up on the ski slopes). John and I arrived in Reno in the early evening and drove through a blizzard to get to Incline Village, where we were staying. The guy at the rental car place told us about an amazingly helpful Nevada website that reports road conditions & closures on a color-coded map. Some roads even had live webcams you could click on. The mountain pass to Incline was closed, so we drove around through Carson City and even that felt pretty harrowing, especially once it got dark, but we made it. In the morning we woke up to snowy lumps where cars were supposed to be. Hello, winter!

We were pretty much snowed in that first day as lot of the passes were still closed. We did manage to shovel out cars and the driveway and venture out to rent skis (downhill for John and his friends, cross-country for pokey old me!) This was the road back to the house after it was plowed:

Most roads looked pretty much like that the entire time we were there!

One of John’s relatives lives in Incline Village & I was so happy that we were able to meet up with her. She said one of her favorite things to do in the winter is watching the sunset at the beach. Off we went! I froze my butt off but it really was beautiful. I felt like an arctic explorer (thankfully with a hot shower waiting at the end of the day!)

Winter sunset at Lake Tahoe

The weather was so strange during our week in Tahoe. That first day was a bust for skiing, another day it rained & was too windy for the lifts to run, and on another there were storms that logged over a thousand lightning strikes which shut down the slopes. In between all that, I did manage to cross-country ski a handful of times, once in a lovely snowstorm. The lady at the trailhead ski lodge called me a brave soul (I was the only person out there besides a couple who were snowshoeing) and made me promise to check in with her when I got back.

On our last day I’d wanted to drive up to the Tahoe-Donner Cross-country Ski Center (it’s supposed to be one of the best in the country) but once again the pass was closed and it was snowing like crazy. I thought, well, okay, maybe I can at least get to something closer, but after seeing a couple car accidents, and encountering unplowed roads I didn’t want to take a chance on in a rental, I finally gave up. Instead I stuck close to the lake and stopped here and there to photograph it. These turned out to be some of my favorite photographs from the trip. I love that the blue-grey of the lake was just about the only “color.”

Driving back to the airport after the week was over, we decided to brave the pass. Ha ha ha! This is what it looked like for a good half of it:

Winter! I LOVED this trip. I loved that I got fresh air and exercise doing something that didn’t feel like exercise. I loved the giant icicles and the snow piles taller than I am. I loved the tall trees and skiing out in the middle of nowhere. And I love that spring is coming soon…

A Christmas Adventure

Construction crane at sunset

How was your Christmas? Mine was wacky and I loved it! On Christmas Eve I met John in the Atlanta airport after his last flight. We had dinner and spent the night at a hotel we stay at every so often when John only has a short day in between trips. I love the view out the south windows— it’s a big construction zone (more hotels maybe?) and I love watching the cranes move things around. Something about it is just so peaceful.

Christmas morning started with tea in bed while watching Netflix’s Princess Switch (do not laugh!) We’re trying to get through as many of these ridiculous movies as we can this season.

We shared a few gifts after that…

Hotel iron

Why this photo of an iron, you’re wondering? Well, I’ve noticed this particular brand of iron, the Voyager, at many of the hotels we’ve stayed at. In years past I wouldn’t have thought twice about an iron, but now that I sew, I’ve been on the lookout for a good iron and I fell in love with these (so steamy!) I tried to find out where I could buy one but they’re only available wholesale to the hospitality industry. What did John manage to do? He apparently went up to the front desk lady and said, “I have kind of an odd question…” and proceeded to explain my love for this iron. Well, not only did they give him an iron but they wrapped it up in shiny red paper! I think John was torn, as I’d asked him to please not give me any household appliances/utensils/etc. (I’ll never forget the look on my mom’s face the year she received a set of spatulas — ooof! — from my dad. It turned into a family joke, but still…) I have to say, though, I thought nothing but WOW. Huge points to a guy who goes out of his way to find the unfindable and probably embarrasses himself a little in the process (similar to the time I thought I lost my teddy bear in the Salt Lake City airport and John got on the phone to the Chief Pilot’s office asking about it: “Ummm… my wife might have lost her teddy bear…”) Anyway, the hotel staff thought it was sweet — Give this man an iron! — and I thanked them (and John) profusely.

Hotel carpet

On the way out I stopped to photograph the carpet. I’m noticing that a lot of these newly renovated hotels have great carpet colors (my dress even matched on this particular day!) It’s giving me ideas for sewing some outfits based on their color schemes, lol.

Our travel day took us out and back to Miami with an amazingly fun flight crew, especially Paula, the lead flight attendant, who insisted we take a selfie with her once our day together ended.

Delta Airlines selfie

I got in a lot of reading and napping and journaling (my favorite things to do on a plane).

Airplane window reading

We had Christmas dinner at the Atlanta airport Carrabba’s and parted ways at 10:30, when John flew to Pensacola and I headed home to Columbus (in a first class seat! — Merry Christmas from Delta I guess!).

I know I thought the holiday might feel weird and sad doing something so unlike all the Christmases I used to know, but this was insanely fun. Mom and Dad would love that we galavanted around all day and made a new tradition. I don’t know when I’ll see an actual Christmas Day in my own house, but that’s okay— this was so gosh-darn fun I might do it again on New Year’s :-)

Good Morning, New York!

December 8, 2018 Claudia Retter
Manhattan skyline

John’s daughter wanted to visit a friend in NYC before things got holiday-busy but John didn’t have much time off, so we spent a quick day and a half with our family friends. It was Gracie’s first time in the city…

First up: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Friday night festivities. We walked across Central Park to get there and spent some time poking around. Music and cocktails and twinkly lights… just magical!

Suits of armor

The Delacroix exhibit just opened, and while of course his paintings are spectacular, his journals were what fascinated me the most.

As well as this little landscape study.

Somewhere near the prints wing I passed display cases featuring handmade artist books. Inspiring!

And of course I couldn’t leave without tracking down John Singer Sargent’s Madame X. (Make a left at Washington Crossing the Delaware… down the hall a bit… etc.)

We started Saturday with an out-and-back on the Staten Island Ferry.

Followed by a feast at Eataly and a bit of overspending at the Lindt store :-)

A great visit with great friends (although too short!), and such a fun start to the holidays. Thank you Richard, Natalie, Alexander & Marguerite! xo
